Sanctum Sanctorum/Scala Santa, created at the end of the 16th century to enclose the original papal chapel and the added ‘Steps of Pilate’. (06:00-12:30 and 15:00-19:00 in winter, 15:30-19:00 in summer.)

Cross at the pedestrian crossing and go to the entrance. In the vestibule is 19th-century statuary of unusual sweetness.

The central staircase, with 28 marble steps, wood-covered to prevent wear, is the holy one to be climbed on one’s knees. Tradition holds that the blood of Christ stained the 2nd, 11th and 28th steps (note the peepholes in the wood). Four flights of ordinary steps flank the Scala Santa to allow visitors a normal climb. It is also surrounded by frescoes of Old and New Testament subjects, painted around 1589 by minor artists.
